The Amazon Rainforest - A short introduction.

A canopy of green spreads over a 2,030,000 square miles ecosystem that includes the Amazon River and Rainforest (the largest and densest rainforest in the world) and upwards of five million animal species.

Over 25,000 species of plants and more species of animals can be found here than anywhere else on the planet. There are also 170 Indian cultural groups living in the Amazon Rainforest. Remnants of the 7 million who flourished here once but who had been reduced to a population of no more than 200,000 today.

The Amazon River is the planet's largest body of fresh water with 1100 tributaries 17 of which are more than 1000 miles long. Many of the tributaries begin in Colombia and Peru.

Recognized as the world’s greatest reserve of life form with the greatest biological accumulation of carbon on Earth the Amazon is one of the largest remaining contiguous tracts of nature on earth. The Amazon is the "lungs of the world."

Marajó Island located near the river mouth is the size of Switzerland.

Once an oceanic gulf some 250 million years ago opening westward to the Pacific Ocean, the Amazon River today flows 1/5 of the world’s fresh water into the Atlantic Ocean. Travel on the river may be by houseboat or by the more primitive method shown here.

The two large rivers in this picture are the Rio Negro (at top) and the Rio Solimões (at bottom). They meet just below Manaus to form the Amazon River. The green areas are heavily forested while blue areas are either cleared forest or open water. The yellow and red areas are flooded forest or floating meadows.

The meeting of the waters - where the dark water of the Rio Negro meet but do not mix with the muddy waters of the Rio Solimões - photo thanks to VVD Seguros and Pallas Gradmann & Holler of Brazil.

Official Amazon Rainforest Information

If you are seeking ecological adventures, the north of Brazil offers
unique opportunities. There are 7 states in this region: Acre, Amapá,
Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Roraima and Tocantins
The Amazon is the largest biological reserve in the world and has
unparalleled natural resources, as well as one third of the planet's
living species. The rivers of the Amazon Basin, through which one-fifth of
the world's fresh water flows, are "roads" that lead to the heart of the
jungle. Ten of the twenty largest rivers on earth are located int the
Amazon River Basin. One of them is the Amazon River, which is 4,087 miles
long.
The jungle lodges provide comfort and safety for those who wish to explore
the flora and fauna on long river cruises. The Amazon folklore and the
typical regional cuisine are also special attractions. The Boi-bumbá
festival, held in Parintins in June, heats up the long-standing rivalries
between the different indignous groups. The feathered art of the Indians,
as well as the Marajó Island and Tapajós tribal pottery can be found in
the popular Ver-o-Peso market, in Belém, Pará. In Manaus, the free-trade
zone is a haven for buying duty free electronics. In this state capital,
you can visit the exquisite 19th century renaissance style Amazon Theatre.
